Your Primary Care Physician: A Partner Focused on Your Health

Primary care physician dr. Haas with a patient

Your primary care doctor plays an important role in your well-being. He or she works as your partner in helping you to stay healthy throughout the stages of life, as well as in diagnosing and treating illnesses and medical conditions that arise.

In a medical emergency, you should always go immediately to the nearest emergency room or call 911. But for all other medical attention, your primary care doctor is your first stop. Primary care doctors diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries and, if you need specialty care, will refer you to a medical specialist. Your primary care doctor will stay informed and involved with any medical treatment you require. For these reasons, it's important to choose the right primary care doctor for you and your family.

Treatments, Therapies and Services

Torrance Memorial Physician Network offers three kinds of primary care doctors:

  • Internists who treat adults and specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and management of disease and chronic conditions
  • Pediatricians who treat children up until age of 21
  • Family medicine practitioners who take care of people of all ages, from birth through senior years

Primary Care Doctors Focus on Providing Three Types of Care:

Dr. Lee Kissle and Dr. Baars

  • Preventive care to help you stay healthy. This includes making sure that you are getting the immunizations and screening tests you need at the right time and providing advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle.
  • Treating illnesses and injuries. Your primary care physician identifies and treats common medical conditions, evaluates the severity of health complaints, refers you to specialists as needed, treats illnesses and helps you to manage chronic diseases, such as diabetes or hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • Coordinates medical care. Medical care can be complicated, particularly for patients who have one or more chronic medical conditions. Your primary care doctor ensures you see the right doctors at the right times, keeps track of your treatments and medications to verify that one doesn't interfere with another, and communicates with each of your doctors about what's going on with your health.
