What are Sinuses?

Your sinuses are air-filled cavities inside your skill that are lined with a thin layer of mucus and connect to your nasal cavity through small openings. They are located behind your forehead, behind your cheekbones, between your eyes and behind your eyes.

Sinus problems can be caused by infections (viral, bacterial or fungal), allergies and nasal polyps, which are non-cancerous fleshy growths that develop in the lining of your nasal passages. When your sinuses become swollen or blocked, it prevents your nasal passages from draining properly and can lead to a buildup of mucus. Mucus buildup in your sinuses may cause symptoms, including:

  • Sinus headaches
  • Facial pain of pressure
  • A runny or stuffy nose that lasts more than a week
  • Reduced sense of smell or taste
  • Cough
  • Bad breath
  • Thick or discolored mucus
  • Fatigue
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Toothache or jaw pain
  • Sore throat
