Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is an important and powerful tool in the treatment of many types of cancer. Administered by radiation oncologists, radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to destroy the DNA in cancer cells, causing them to die as they divide. Radiation therapy is highly effective in cancers that are fast growing but less effective in cancers that grow slowly.

Radiation therapy is widely used for many forms of cancer, including:

Radiation therapy precisely targets the tumor by using equipment called a "linear accelerator" to deliver radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer.

Advances in Radiation Therapy

Modern advances in radiation therapy techniques permit highly precise focusing of the beam, with the goal of delivering high doses to the cancer and much lower doses to surrounding tissues. This makes the treatments more effective and limits side effects. Here at Cancer Care, we're proud to be first in the South Bay area to treat patients with the world's most technologically advanced linear accelerator, the Truebeam®.

Radiation therapy is typically given five days a week for a number of weeks. This period varies depending upon dose necessary to treat a particular cancer. The first (treatment planning) visit typically takes two hours; daily treatment visits from that point on generally take 10-15 minutes.
