Community Events, Heart Care

Valvular heart disease is any disease process involving one or more of the four valves of the heart. These conditions occur largely as a result of aging. Most people are in their late 50s when diagnosed, and more than one in ten people over 75 have it. If the disease is picked up early, the outcomes from surgery are very good. Life expectancy goes back to match that of healthy people the same age. But when valves become severely calcified and other health complications are also present, patients are considered high risk and inoperable. Learn about the latest procedures to treat heart valve disease, including the minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, commonly known as TAVR, now being used to treat such high risk patients.
