Your Primary Care Physician: A Partner Focused on Your Health

Your primary care doctor plays an important role in your well-being. He or she works as your partner in helping you to stay healthy throughout the stages of life, as well as in diagnosing and treating illnesses and medical conditions that arise.

In a medical emergency, you should always go immediately to the nearest emergency room or call 9-1-1. But for all other medical attention, your primary care doctor is your first stop. Primary care doctors diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries and, if you need specialty care, will refer you to a medical specialist. Your primary care doctor will stay informed and involved with any medical treatment you require. For these reasons, it's important to choose the right primary care doctor for you and your family.

Choosing the Right Primary Care Doctor

Internist, Family Medicine Practitioner or Pediatrician?

Here at the Torrance Memorial Physician Network. we have three kinds of primary care doctors – internists, who treat adults; pediatricians, who treat children up until the age of 21; and family medicine practitioners, who take care of people of all ages, infancy through the senior years and, therefore, are able to know, interact with and care for your entire family.

All of our primary care physicians take the time to get to know you and learn as much as they can about your family's health history.

Primary Care Doctors Focus on Providing Three Types of Care:

Dr. Lee Kissle and Dr. Baars

  • Preventive care to help you stay healthy. This includes making sure that you are getting the immunizations and screening tests you need at the right time and providing advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle.
  • Treating illnesses and injuries. Your primary care physician identifies and treats common medical conditions, evaluates the severity of health complaints, refers you to specialists as needed, treats illnesses and helps you to manage chronic diseases, such as diabetes or hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • Coordinates medical care. Medical care can be complicated, particularly for patients who have one or more chronic medical conditions. Your primary care doctor ensures you see the right doctors at the right times, keeps track of your treatments and medications to verify that one doesn't interfere with another, and communicates with each of your doctors about what's going on with your health.

Primary Care Doctors Stay Involved In Your Medical Care

The Torrance Memorial Physician Network is aligned with and owned by the Torrance Memorial Health System. Not only does this mean we have access to the full resources of a nationally recognized hospital, it also means we're on the same team when it comes to your care. Our relationship with Torrance Memorial's vast network of health care providers keeps us in constant communication, providing fully integrated, collaborative care. When you see a medical specialist or receive inpatient or outpatient treatment at Torrance Memorial, you can feel confident that your primary care doctor is informed and involved every step of the way.
