The obstetrical services of the Torrance Memorial Physician Network Women's
If you are young, healthy and have no reason to think you'll have trouble
conceiving, you don't have to seek medical advice prior to getting
pregnant – but we're happy to discuss what you can do to become
and stay as healthy as possible for this important passage in your life.
Women with pre-existing health conditions (especially if you are taking
medications) are advised to schedule a preconception consultation and
Infertility Diagnosis and Treatment
Pregnancy doesn't happen easily for everyone; we are committed to helping
you fulfill your dream of conceiving and bearing a healthy child. We provide
diagnostic testing and treatment for all stages of infertility in a sensitive
and supportive environment. While our expertise does not extend to the
ability to perform IVF (in vitro fertilization), if your journey to parenthood
takes you this area we work with several outstanding IVF groups and can
refer you to a place where your dreams for a family can become a reality.
Pre-and Post-Natal Care
We understand that there's no such thing as a "routine" pregnancy
– each and every one is special! To that end, we provide the full
range of warm and supportive pre- and post-natal care, emphasizing the
well-being of both mother and baby at every point in time. We work closely
with the perinatologists (high risk pregnancy specialists) to provide
you with the best pregnancy outcome possible.
Some forms of genetic screening (to identify whether your baby is at risk
of certain genetic conditions) are now part of routine prenatal care.
Other diagnostic tests may be advised if you or the father of your child
have a known risk for a genetic condition or if potential risks are identified
during routine testing.
Women now start families at older ages and we've also gotten better
at identifying potential problems earlier in pregnancy. As a result, we're
now seeing more "high risk pregnancies" than ever before. Rest
assured that the vast majority result in happy, healthy babies. But, since
the uncertainty of a high risk pregnancy can be challenging, we're
focused on providing clear and consistent communication from diagnosis
through treatment and delivery. Our goal is to clearly explain every aspect
of care, discussing all available and appropriate options, to help you
make the best and most comfortable decisions for your family.
Your pregnancy may be considered "high risk" if you have pre-existing
health conditions, including:
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Preeclampsia (toxemia)
- Diabetes or other endocrine disorders
- Kidney or gastrointestinal disease
- Other chronic or infectious diseases
You also may be considered to have a high risk pregnancy if any of the
following conditions develop:
- Abnormal AFP (alpha fetoprotein) blood test
- Multiples (twins, triplets or more)
- Recurrent pre-term labor and delivery
- Premature rupture of membranes
- History of recurrent pregnancy loss
- Suspected fetal growth problems
