Radio Frequency Ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation is a promising new technique that can be used to remove cancerous tissue from organs, including the liver, lungs, and kidney.

Radio frequency ablation utilizes high-energy radio waves– delivered through a probe inserted into a tumor – to destroy cancer cells. This creates a high temperature that kills the cancer in the immediate vicinity. This treatment can be done in the operating room but more frequently is administered by an interventional radiologist using CT scan or ultrasound image guidance. Radiofrequency ablation is most effective when there are only a few small areas of cancer that need to be targeted.
